Seneca Lake Wine Tasting — Pick a Shore, Then Pick a Pace

My main advice after wine tasting around the Interlaken area of the Finger Lakes, between Seneca and Cayuga, is to commit to one side of a lake. My second piece of advice is to decide how much sitting down you intend to do.

These sound like minor logistical choices. They determine most of the day.

We visited Boundary Breaks, Forge Cellars, and Damiani, with dinner at Graft. The wineries sit along Seneca's eastern side, which gives the trip a coherent shape. There is enough here to hold your attention without making the opposite shore an obligation.

Planning an East Seneca Lake Wine Trip

For these three wineries, the useful geography is Lodi and Burdett along the east side of Seneca, with Watkins Glen at the lake's southern end for dinner. Interlaken helps locate the wider trip between the two lakes; it does not mean every stop is in the village. Check the actual addresses before turning a list of names into a route.

I would choose a direction through those stops once the starting point and tasting appointments are settled. Dinner in Watkins Glen gives the day a natural southern endpoint. There is little benefit in fixing an elegant sequence on paper before checking which experience you can actually book.

The same restraint should govern the second lake. East Seneca and west Cayuga share the land between the lakes; going from one to the other is different from driving around Seneca to reach its western shore. I would still save Cayuga for a day built around Cayuga when adding it would make us hurry. The point of choosing a shore is to spend more of the trip at the places that prompted it.

Our base for the Finger Lakes stretch was The Cider House around Interlaken, after time in the Kingston and Hudson Valley area. The full road-trip account connects those parts. Having access to two lakes was useful; it did not oblige us to cover both in an afternoon.

Forge or Damiani After Boundary Breaks?

I was at Boundary Breaks when the next-stop question became concrete: Damiani or Forge? Both belonged to the east-side plan. The decision needed to include where we were going afterward, rather than compare two names in isolation.

A route involving the southern end of Seneca made Forge more logical than an initial reading of the itinerary suggested. That is the limit of any simple shore rule: use the actual start, destination, and appointment times. A route that proceeds through the south is different from one that asks you to double back.

Wiemer was also high on my planning list, but it was a different commitment on west Seneca. I was not interested in spending an hour driving to a tasting I might not get into. The broader Finger Lakes winery comparison covers that choice, along with Sheldrake Point, Wagner, and Idol Ridge as possibilities for different kinds of days.

Standing Tastings or an Adirondack Chair

One version is straightforward: stand at the bar, taste, talk about the wine, buy what you like, and leave. The pleasure is in the conversation and the comparison. You are paying attention to the glass, and the bottles you take home extend the visit.

The other version involves a charcuterie board and an Adirondack chair. You buy something to drink, sit down, and give the place some time. The view becomes a substantial part of why you came.

I would happily plan either kind of day. The mistake is filling the itinerary as though every stop will be a quick tasting while imagining that every stop will also include a leisurely hour outside. Eventually someone has to interrupt a perfectly good afternoon to preserve the schedule.

Choose the pace before choosing the number of wineries. If sitting outside is the attraction, leave room for it to work.

Boundary Breaks in Lodi

Boundary Breaks is in Lodi, with a focus on Riesling and Cabernet Franc. Its Rieslings span dry through sweet styles, which gives a tasting a useful subject: how much range there can be within a grape that still gets reduced to a single expectation.

The property also accommodates the two kinds of visit quite explicitly. Its visitor information describes standing tastings, seated service, and wine by the glass or bottle out on the lawn in Adirondack chairs. You can arrive with different intentions and choose accordingly.

That flexibility has limits worth checking: the current policy accepts parties of six or fewer without reservations, while larger parties must contact the winery in advance. Outdoor service also depends on the season. A standing tasting and a long afternoon on the lawn are options to plan around, rather than promises attached to every visit.

That is the decision I would make before getting comfortable. A chair facing the landscape is a fairly effective argument against whatever comes next.

Forge Cellars: The Salon or a Guided Tasting

Forge makes a similar distinction through its spaces. The Summer House hosts guided tastings by reservation. The Salon offers a more casual visit, with flights, glasses, bottles, and light food, plus indoor and outdoor space overlooking Seneca Lake.

It is a useful place to be honest about what you want from wine tourism. Sometimes I want the explanation. Sometimes the explanation can wait while I sit somewhere pleasant with a glass. Both are reasons to visit a producer; they require different amounts of structure.

For planning purposes, Forge's separate formats make that choice easy to see. Book the guided experience when that is the purpose of the visit. Give the Salon enough time when the purpose is to settle in.

Damiani Wine Cellars in Burdett

Damiani is in Burdett, also on the east side of Seneca. Its tasting menu reaches across whites, reds, and sparkling wine, including Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Lemberger.

That breadth offers a way to change the conversation while staying on the same shore. A geographically compact trip can still have variety. There is no need to equate another long drive with a more complete understanding of the region.

Boundary Breaks, Forge, and Damiani give you three distinct stops to consider. I would treat them as the shape of a trip, with the amount of lingering deciding how to divide the time.

Dinner at Graft in Watkins Glen

We had dinner at Graft Wine + Cider Bar in Watkins Glen. Its seasonal kitchen and New York drinks focus keep dinner connected to the region, and its North Franklin Street location puts it at the southern end of the lake.

Dinner deserves space in the plan, too. A day built around tasting can become oddly preoccupied with getting to the next pour. I would rather arrive at the evening with an appetite and some attention left for a meal.

Returning to the Finger Lakes in Fall

For a fall return, I would keep the same discipline. Pick a shore. Check the wineries' current tasting arrangements, particularly if outdoor seating is central to the plan. Then decide whether this is a day of focused tastings or a day with a long pause in an Adirondack chair. If you are still deciding between wine, a cabin, and an art trip, the upstate fall weekend overview starts with that choice.

I would settle transportation before making tasting appointments, too: a designated driver or a booked car, with the return from dinner included. A route that works geographically still needs to work for the people following it.

My preference is to leave enough time that buying a board and sitting down feels like a decision we are allowed to make. The next winery will still be there on another trip.

Our cabin weekend in Hunter arrived at much the same answer through cooking: choose a place where spending time together is enough to fill the day.
